Final Project

For my final project I have contacted the University’s “Friends of the Libraries.” I proposed to map the donations that they have received from Madisonians over the past three years. The group has asked me to look particularly at their donors that give above the $100 mark and I will be presenting my maps to the group’s board of directors at their first meeting in the fall. Wow, I’ve got a lot to learn in ArcView.

I have started talking with the Central Branch of the Madison Public Library and e-mailed Barb Dimick to find out what data would be best mapped for the MPL. My initial proposal focused on the picklist for Central from other libraries, but that looks to be changing.

Leah and I are looking into making some maps of one (or more) sections of a bike path here in Madison and identifying local businesses and/or other landmarks, depending upon what information the organization we work with wants on the maps. We we are contacting the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin now and if that doesn't work out, we have a couple of other organizations we will contact.

I'll be creating a GIS for my job at WiscAMP. I'll probably start with some basic templates for the state of Wisconsin, locating our 31 partner schools within them. Then spend some time considering all the different database info I'll want to bring in ... from county and city demographics, to school-specific data about enrollment and persistence rates of underrepresented students. I'm hoping these systems will be useful for our own ongoing research and evaluation, but also for generating outputs for our website. Such interactive maps may foster increased interest and collaboration among the partner institutions.

I am also interested in working in some capacity with the public libraries. Maybe if Paula is focusing on the central branch, I could focus on one (or some) of the other branches. I’m sure we can figure out some way to avoid redundancy
